Who is allowed to drive across the Hackerbrücke bridge? The current traffic situation
The Hackerbrücke is a classic example of a Munich traffic artery that brings together several types of use in a small space. The rules are clearly defined, but in everyday life they often cause conflicts, especially for cyclists.
1. Hackerbrücke by car
Normally, cars and all vehicles up to 18 tons are permitted to use the Hackerbrücke bridge. Of course, the weight limit still applies. Vehicles over 3.5 tons may only use the bridge if they have a destination within Munich (delivery traffic). One lane is available in each direction – north and south. This lane is very narrow when wider vehicles cross the bridge. However, there is a restriction for car traffic: During Oktoberfest, the bridge is completely closed to car traffic in the evenings and on weekends to accommodate the enormous flow of pedestrians to and from the Theresienwiese.
2. Cycling
The current situation for cyclists on the Hackerbrücke bridge is very unsatisfactory . There is no dedicated, physically separated cycle path . Cyclists have to share the car lane . Due to the narrow lanes and high traffic volume, cycling on the bridge is not without its dangers . The City of Munich is examining the possibility of improvements, but the situation remains unresolved. This lack of safety is the main reason why the cycling advocacy group is demanding that the bridge be kept completely car-free after its renovation in order to create a safe cycle path.
3. Pedestrians
For pedestrians, crossing the Hackerbrücke bridge is safe. The bridge has its own wide walkways, structurally separated from the roadway and mounted on slightly lower cantilevered arms. This separation ensures maximum safety while also offering the unobstructed, famous view over the railway tracks. However, the bridge is extremely busy, especially in the evenings and on weekends, when it transforms into the aforementioned sunset hotspot .
Looking to the future: Renovation as an opportunity
With the planned major renovation of the bridge starting in 2027, the bridge will be completely closed to cars for approximately three years . However, the pedestrian and cycle paths will remain open. Many initiatives see this closure as a unique opportunity to prove that the Hackerbrücke can remain permanently car-free afterward , finally creating a safe and spacious area for cyclists and pedestrians. –> Interesting facts about the Hackerbrücke renovation
