Is a visit to the Hackerbrücke bridge worthwhile?
Yes, I think so. You absolutely have to see the Hackerbrücke – but come in the evening! The Hackerbrücke is one of those places in Munich that you might not find on every tourist poster, but that you simply have to see. It’s more than just a bridge. It’s a special viewpoint – with a view of the famous towers of the Frauenkirche.
During the day, it’s obviously incredibly important: this massive, old iron bridge from the late 19th century carries traffic, and especially us pedestrians and cyclists, over the gigantic railway yard at the main train station. You can see all 26 tracks below you, and technically, with its riveted steel truss construction, it’s a genuine architectural monument from the Gründerzeit era – over 130 years old!
But the bridge truly becomes magical in the evening . It transforms into the best, unofficial meeting place in the entire city. The reason? The view to the west is completely unobstructed. This means that when the sun sets, thousands of people gather here – students, commuters, tourists – all with an after-work beer in hand. They watch as the sun spectacularly sinks directly over the maze of railway tracks. This mix of urban hustle and bustle , the passing trains, and this breathtaking display of colors in the sky – that’s pure Munich feeling !
It’s a special, atmospheric place that blends industrial history with the vibrant life of the city. So, if you’re in Munich, plan your walk so that you ‘re standing on the Hackerbrücke bridge just before sunset – you won’t forget it! Photographers will be interested to know that if you come here in the winter months, you can admire the sunrise behind the towers of the Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Lady).
